Abstract

This paper demonstrates that undergoing physiotherapy based on resistance training is beneficial for people with cerebral palsy, both physically and mentally (particularly self-esteem). This approach provides variety, giving a new momentum to the physiotherapy sessions. The session objectives need to be well defined: physical condition improvement, muscular strength gain, muscular volume gain, weight loss, function maintenance or improvement. It is also essential to master the different resistance training variables: targeted muscular group, sequence of exercises, contraction systems, and protocols used. Based on scientific data, this article sets out several resistance training methods that are adapted for cerebral palsy. Finally, it details practical situations.
