Abstract

The authors recognize three principal geotectonic stages in the development of this area: pre-Mesozoic geosynclinal, Mesozoic-Paleogene platformal, and Neogene-Quaternary epiplatformal. Whereas the depths of generation of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons in the platformal stage did not exceed 5000 m, these depths differed significantly during the phase of postplatformal activation and were more than 6000-8000 m. As a result of short-lived orogenic movements, zones of generation of liquid hydrocarbons could be distributed to depths of 6500 m and more. This indicates that there is more evidence in favor of discovering deep-seated oil in sediments of young fold regions than on the platforms. The possibility of the existence of an upper zone of gas formation is supported and the history of geologic development and conditions of petroleum formation in the fold regions indicates the need for a differentiated assessment of the prospects of oil and gas.
