Abstract
Biodegradable poly(lactic acid) PLA and modified TiO2 nanoparticles (with propanoic acid) were prepared by solution blending method. Nanocomposite films containing 0.5, 2, 5 and 10 wt% of nanoparticles were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transformed spectroscopy (FTIR) and puncture measurements. Improved dispersion was identified only at lower content (less than 2 wt%) of TiO2 loadings. Increased degree of crystallinity (from 7.4 to 34%) in composites filled with modified and unmodified TiO2 was detected. Puncture tests confirmed increased brittleness of the films with increasing content of nanoparticles.
