Abstract

The PL/I language has been updated with a new compiler for OS/2.What's in it?How is it better than existing versions? In this Paper the enhancements over OS PL/I Version 2 (IBM, 1990a, b) are outlined. The new features include strongly-typed list-processing facilities in which declarations and built-in functions bind the pointer to a particular data structure template; ordinals; and a host of built-in functions. Other new data types include unsigned arithmetic data, and zero-terminated varying-length character strings. Aliases enable user types to be defined, while the TYPE attribute permits a data type to be created in the image of another. There is a new method of overlaying one data type with another, intended to improve maintainability. To complement the ordinals and to extend the usefulness of the language generally, new options for the DO statement avoid overflow on the last trip. The macro processor has been significantly enhanced, with new statements and new built-in functions.
