Abstract

The personal requirement to live as the other sex is not new. The Roman goddess, Venus Castina, was dedicated to feminine souls locked in male bodies. In the 1930s, German sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld facilitated sex change. One celebrated patient was Einar Wegener, who became Lili Elbe, “The Danish Girl.” In 1951, British WW II Spitfire pilot, Robert Cowell became Roberta Cowell. In 1952, WW II American veteran, George Jorgensen became Christine Jorgensen. The newspaper headline, “Ex-GI Becomes Blond Beauty” introduced “sex-change” to America. In 1953, Times of London reporter, James Morris, climbed half way up Mt Everest with Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. When he received word that the two made it all the way, he descended 22000 feet to transmit an exclusive message of success to reach the UK just in time for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. In 1972 Morris continued a celebrated writing career as Jan Morris.
