Abstract

Flow visualization and PIV measurements were carried out in the plane of symmetry of end-wall region upstream of surface mounted cylinders with circular and square cross sections. The influence of aspect ratio was documented on the vortex system in this flow region for a laminar approach boundary layer. The primary vortex for a circular cylinder was observed to have larger vorticity while the primary vortex for the square cylinder was observed to be farther upstream. The vortex systems were steady only for aspect ratio of 0.5 for both cases. For aspect ratios of 1.0 and 1.5 the vortex system showed an oscillatory behavior for both cylinders. The square cylinder vortex system exhibited higher frequency and amplitude of oscillation .
