Abstract

Pituitary tumors have challenged the imagination and skills of neurochemists, physiologists, endocrinologists, neurologists, and neurosurgeons for decades. The improvement in neurosurgical techniques of removal of pituitary tumors, at times no greater than a few millimeters, has probably been the main impetus of our ever-increasing understanding of pathology and pathophysiology of pituitary tumors and in the burgeoning discoveries made in the field of neuroendocrinology. This article brings the reader up to date as to the anatomy, pathophysiology, pathology, clinical presentation, endocrine and radiologic diagnosis, and treatment of pituitary tumors.
