Abstract
Previous investigations of the pituitary and thyroid function in depressive patients have yielded conflicting and contradictory results, probably because of the unhomogeneity of the patient groups studied and the restricted number of the parameters usually estimated. Nineteen psychotic depressive patients aged 43–57 yrs (mean±SD 50±4.8), 11 neurotic aged 33–67 yrs (mean±SD 54±9) (Sinanan et al. 1975) and 10 normal controls aged 39–55 yrs (mean± SD 48.3±8), all males, were studied. Hospital adaptation prior to study lasted for 3 weeks. During this period patients received only 10 mg diazepam daily. The emotional condition was assessed according to the Hamilton scale (H). None of the subjects investigated suffered from any other disease or inhabited an endemic goitre area.
