Abstract

Mechanism of pitting corrosion of different Al alloys in anhydrous ethanol have been evidenced and discussed. Corrosion tests were carried out in an autoclave placed in a temperature controlled oil bath. It was observed that aluminum alloy characteristics greatly influence pitting activation and propagation mechanisms and morphologies. Better electrochemical stability was observed for AA6082 alloys. Instead intense corrosion phenomena were observed on AA5754 and AA5083 samples. Based on experimental results, a schemed model of the degradation stages of aluminum alloys surface during dry corrosion was proposed.
