Abstract

A study has been made of the pitting corrosion resistance of AISI 431 stainless steel and three corrosion resistant steels, Alloy 1210, Alloy 825, and 3CR12, in a chloride solution. Additionally, the pitting corrosion resistance of AISI 431 stainless steel has been determined in synthetic mine waters containing permutations of chloride, sulphate, and nitrate ions at pH values of 3·8–9·4. It is shown that the addition of both sulphate and nitrate to chloride solutions increases pitting resistance of the AISI 431 steel. At high and low pH values the efficiency of nitrate as an inhibitor is diminished by the addition of sulphate ions; at neutral pH values the opposite effect is apparent.
