Abstract

ABSTRACT This study finds that three commonly used techniques for estimating the fractal dimension of one-dimensional records are not reliable when the underlying fGn signal is either limited, non-Gaussian or non-stationary. The three techniques are the rescaled range (R/S), variogram and spectral methods. Techniques which transform raw data into Gaussian and stationary data sets for more reliable parameter estimates are presented and illustrated with log data.
