Abstract
PurposeThis papers aims to look at important developments in the agency industry, which generate implications for the performance of agencies, “temps” and their user firms. The paper sets out key performance implications of these developments.Design/methodology/approachThis paper reviews literature on subject and draws on 15 years of primary research and secondary analysis of the sector by the authors.FindingsThere are many models of temporary agency worker supply and ways of accommodating “temps” in the workplace. This paper considers some of the challenges for managers, as well as tensions that can arise, not least from implementation of the agency working regulations.Originality/valueThis paper sheds light on new developments in the agency sector and draws out performance implications of continued and changing use of agency workers.
