Abstract

This paper deals with some origins of mechanically induced noise caused by various forces (resulting from the combination of combustion and inertia forces) which act on the moving parts of the engine to accelerate them across their running clearances and thus cause mechanical impacts. These impacts are found to be the main cause of the predominant high frequency noise. Various methods are presented for estimating one of these source, i.e., piston slap. This phenomenon of piston slap has been investigated by oscillographic and simulation techniques to determine its relative magnitude, compared with the other noise sources of the engine. It has been found that this source of noise is important and its significance will become greater as other sources, such as combustion, are reduced.
