Abstract
Piptocephalis fimbriata sp.nov. is described with a lytic head cell, smooth unthickened zygospores and an extension of the host range in the genus Mortierella . Collections of dung and soil samples indicated that both Piptocephalis and Syncephalis could be more frequently isolated from litter and A-horizon soil samples, especially from woodland and pasture habitats, than from dung. It is suggested that the occurrence of Piptocephalis in dung samples is not the result of the suitability of dung as a habitat for the parasite, but a combination of the ability of dung to support a rich mucorine flora and the invasion of already-established Piptocephalis from the underlying soil and litter.
