Abstract

A convenient preparation of piperidine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid and its N-methyl derivative has been described in detail and the literature pertaining to these compounds has been reviewed. Piperidine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid is prepared by the catalytic reduction of pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid. The preparation of the N-methyl derivative involves the use of formic acid and formaldehyde. Comparison of the melting points of the compounds made and their derivatives with earlier work points to the cis configuration for the compounds.
