Proceedings of the ASCE Pipeline Division Specialty Congress, held in San Diego, California, August 1-4, 2004. Sponsored by the Pipeline Division of ASCE; the ASCE Pipeline Risk Management and Safety Committee; Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe Users Forum; National Association of Corrosion Engineers. This collection of 119 papers discusses state-of-the-art applications in the field of pipeline engineering, including new technologies and products, as well as the changes that challenge pipeline engineers as they move forward in the 21st century. Pipelines provide a vital service, and concern for the safety and welfare of the public have always been a focus. For the professional to effectively serve the public, risk management programs for project and public policy decision-making, condition and vulnerability assessments, pipeline product innovations, and new construction and operation methods are essential. Because public funds compete with various community priorities, developing new technologies to analyze, construct, inspect, operate, rehabilitate, and repair underground infrastructure is crucial. This collection of conference papers discusses the development, applications, advantages, and limitations in pipeline engineering as the profession moves forward. Topics include: risk, asset, and ROW management; security and water supply systems; condition assessment; pipeline materials, design, economics, and construction; corrosion, rehabilitation, and pipe bursting; geographic information systems; and seismic and trenchless technologies.
