Abstract

During the study of the free amino acid spectrum of diseased rice, soybean, potato and tobacco leaves, an unknown compound was detected, the occurrence of which was correlated with an abnormal physiological condition of the plants or with some disturbance in amino acid or protein metabolism. On chromatograms this substance stains blue following fixation with cupric nitrate. After purification with the aid of bacteria, this ‘blue substance’ was identified as pipecolic acid.
