A training course in water distribution has been prepared under the supervision of AWWA Committee 4620 M‐Education. The document is being published in installments (April 1961 issue, p. 458; June 1961 issue, p. 790; and, July 1961 issue, p. 907). This article presents Chapter 5, Pipe System, and covers the following topics: cast iron pipe; asbestos cement pipe; steel pipe; reinforced concrete pipe; plastic pipe; fittings; jointing materials and methods; valves and hydrants; design requirements; standards; materials selections; ease of installation and repair; location of facilities; rights‐of‐way; design sketches; backfill and surface restoration; hydrostatic and leakage tests; disinfection of mains; cleaning of pipe; corrosion; emergency repairs; and, cross‐connection control.
