Abstract

The elastic differential cross sections for pi - scattering on protons at 3.15, 4.13, and 4.95 Bev/c and for pi /sup +/ scattering on protons at 2.92 Bev/c were measured in a spark chamber experiment. The data in the diffraction region for these momenta are reported. The data show the predicted exponential behavior for small four-momentum transfers, but no statistically significant shrinkage of the pi /sup -/ + p diffraction peaks over the 3 to 5 Bev/c interval is observed. Comparison with other data to 16 Bev/c also gives little evidence of shrinkage, although data for 15.9 Bev/c have relatively large published errors. This is in contrast to the proton-proton case, where the data are in good agreement with Regge behavior. It is concluded that the p + p and pi /sup -/ + p diffraction elastic scatterings present different behaviors. The influence of trajectories other than the Pomeranchuk trajectory must be considered to explain diffraction scattering in this energy region by the Regge theory. (H.D.R.)
