Abstract

Theoretical aspects of the (π, 2π) reaction in complex nuclei are studied using soft-pion techniques. A number of advantages which are offered by this process for the study of J π = 0 − spin-isospin oscillations in closed shell nuclei are discussed. Numerical applications of the theory are made for 4He and 16O. The corresponding cross sections are expected to be quite small, but should be accessible as accelerators become available which produce mesons more copiously.
