Abstract

Abstract The absorption rates for bound pions in 16O and 18O are calculated on the basis of an independent particle model modified by short range nucleon-nucleon correlations. The ratio of the 1s and 2p level widths can be explained quantitatively by assuming an exchange of high momenta ( l q ≈ 300 MeV /c) between otherwise independently moving nucleons. It turns out that the detailed properties of the two d-neutrons in 18O are of vital importance to account for the observed differences of the absorption rates.
