Abstract

The killifish, Fundulus heteroclitus, displays a circadian rhythm of colour change (pigment aggregation and dispersion) under constant light and temperature conditions. Pinealectomy eliminates the circadian rhythm of colour change but does not affect physiological colour change and background adaptation. Pineal control of the rhythm of colour change is interpreted as arising from the pineal's involvement in determining circadian organization.
