Abstract

During some 30 years of experience in the aviation field, the author has flown with variety types of aircraft ranging from primitive one with a single engine to advanced-technology aircraft with a glass-cockpit. Through these experiences in the airlines, the author has investigated safety-related issues of automated glass-cockpit aircraft. In this paper, the author will try to clarify the problems and issues of highly automated aircraft from the viewpoint of pilot's situation awareness during flight operations. Some CFIT (Controlled Flight Into Terrain) accidents of glass-cockpit aircraft would be reviewed to analyze how the pilots lost situation awareness. The countermeasures for preventing situation unawareness would be finally discussed.
