Abstract
Abstract The diagnosis of cancer or cardiac abnormalities in infants is often associated with prolonged hospitalization, which can negatively impact caregiver-child bonding due to separation, medical stressors, and changes in the caregiving role. The purpose of this study was to pilot an interdisciplinary psychosocial intervention including songwriting, an expressive journal and activity book, and a bonding assessment. Interventions were facilitated by a board-certified music therapist and Certified Child Life Specialist. A total of 15 families completed the pretest, four intervention sessions, and post intervention test. Quantitative data suggest increased caregiver–child bonding and increased caregiver confidence. Caregivers reported high levels of satisfaction with the intervention in qualitative responses. In summary, results from this pilot study lay the groundwork for a future larger-scale evaluation.
