Abstract

Flexible bronchoscopy is considered an essential diagnostic and therapeutic procedure in pulmonary medicine in high-income countries. TB is the leading infectious killer worldwide, with over 10 million new cases and nearly 1.5 million deaths in 2018.1 Diagnosis of TB requires detection of Mycobacterium TB bacilli, or its DNA, from sputum. However, TB is often difficult to diagnose with conventional sputum-based testing in children and patients with paucibacillary disease. In high-income countries, bronchoscopy is recommended for prompt diagnosis of patients with presumed TB where induced sputum is negative or not available.
