Abstract

In connection with development of low-temperature carbonization of coal, which produces considerable yields of tar pitches, an investigation was made into the possibility of coking these pitches to recover liquid byproducts and a low-ash coke for electrometallurgical use. For this purpose a miniature moving bed contact-coking apparatus was designed, from which basic-process data were obtained from less than 1 pound of liquid feed. The apparatus has other applications.
