Abstract

Abstract : Little work has been done to examine personality differences between female and male Air Force pilots. The current study investigates gender differences at beginning and mid-career points. These samples are compared to non-pilots controls. Female pilots differ from control subjects on most variables. Female student pilots are higher on Neuroticism and Openness than male student pilots. Mid-career female pilots are found only to be higher on Agreeableness compared to mid-career male pilots. Finally, differences are also found when comparing female student pilots to female mid-career pilots with the student pilots higher on Neuroticism and lower on Agreeableness.
