Abstract

Background & Purpose: Pilomatricoma is a benign skin tumor arising from the hair matrix, which is generally recognized in children with female predominance, but rarely seen in male adults on the eyelid and eyebrow region. We reported a male adult with pilomatricoma beneath eyebrow and employed a literature review with much broader age range. Method: A case of report and a literature review among the three age groups, including children, adults and the elderly were employed. Results: Based on our case report and a literature review, the conclusions are drawn as follows: (1) Most of pilomatricomas occur in children with female predominance and rarely in male adults. (2) Typically clinical characteristics of pilomatricomas are solitary, asymptomatic, slowly growing, bony-hard, subcutaneous nodule. (3) Preoperatively, they are often missed diagnosis or differential diagnosis, of which accuracy ranged from 30 to 82%. (4) Pilomatricomas among the three age groups have shown almost the same on clinical characteristics, histopathological features and treatment outcome, except exophtic-perforan variants in children, anettodermal/bullous variants in female adults and mimicking malignant change in the elderly. (5) Most of cases are no recurrence after totally excision and biopsy. Conclusion: Careful clinical examination and high index of suspicion result in preoperatively accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment and avoidnce of unnecessary management of male adults with pilomatricomas.
