Abstract
Piles have been installed in permafrost in the northern hemisphere for various engineering purposes. To date, there is a large amount of published information on piles in permafrost which has led to accepted design practices. However, there are no standards for designing or testing piles. This paper provides an overview of the current state of the art on piles in permafrost and identifies research needs. Pile types, installation methods, design techniques and testing procedures are discussed.
