Abstract
Pain and affective discomfort are very prevalent in dementia patients, but are often difficult to recognize. We applied a systematic literature search on publications on standardised assessment and management of pain en affective discomfort in dementia patients. After studying 352 titels and abstracts, 21 papers were selected, of which only three articles could be included. The included studies all applied to the same intervention, the Serial Trial Intervention, which is a stepwise protocol for assessment and management. The STI has a positive effect on the number of behavioural manifestations. To apply this intervention in Dutch Nursing homes, there should be a translation and adaptation of the STI, because the better availability of nursing home physician, and lower availability of nurse practioners.
