Abstract
The correspondents were surprised to note that not less than five of the 12 cited public medical dissertations on endometriosis originated from the University of Louvain/ Leuven in Belgium. The widespread presence of endometriosis at that time would completely undermine the current thesis that endometriosis in Belgium today is endemic because of dioxin pollution (3). The correspondents, stimulated by Professor Knapp’s provocative study, enlisted the help of libraries at the Universities of Leuven and Louvain-la-Neuve to review the list of medical dissertations. Only the thesis of Jacobus Josephus Henry was presented at the University of Louvain. The other four medical dissertations were presented to the medical faculty of the University of Leiden in Holland. Unfortunately the latter four dissertations are not in the library of the Museum Boerhaave in Leiden.
