Abstract

Extracts of a practically pure sample of the dinoflagellate Prorocentrum micans occurring in “red water” along the coast of southern California were subjected to chromatographic analysis. The main carotenoid was identified as peridinin; minor carotenoids belonged chiefly to the xanthophyll type, but carotenes were found in small quantities. Phytofluene or a similar fluorescent colorless polyene was absent, although other fluorescent compounds were encountered. Preserved extracts yielded pheophytin a in place of the corresponding chlorophyll; however, in freshly heat-killed cells the presence of chlorophyll a was demonstrated.
