Abstract

The perfusion of isolated pig livers with autologous or heterologous blood using membrane oxygenators was compared with respect to O 2 consumption, CO 2 production, bile secretion, and mitochondrial function. Significantly low values of mitochondrial respiratory control and ADP:O ratios were found in the group perfused with heterologous blood. Our results indicate that the study of mitochondrial functions is a useful parameter for definition of the metabolic integrity of the perfused liver and the validity of the utilization of membrane oxygenators in hepatic perfusion.
