Abstract

Piezoelectric materials with intrinsic piezoelectricity are capable of responding to applied mechanical strains (or electric voltages) for sensing (or actuation) applications. In this chapter, we focus on discussing the piezoelectric materials and their coupling physics (e.g., piezophotonics and piezophototronics) for optical/optoelectronic micro-nano devices. Section 12.1 briefly presents the research motivation of piezoelectric materials for optical/optoelectronic applications. Section 12.2 introduces the basic principles of piezoelectric materials, including direct/converse piezoelectric effect, material systems and coupling effects. Section 12.3 illustrates typical optical/optoelectronic applications of piezoelectric materials. Finally, Section 12.4 briefly talks about a perspective on future research directions and practical applications of piezoelectric materials.
