Abstract

Pierre Janet had a rather eventful career with various memberships to different movements but in final resort he remained independent in spite of polemics and pressures. His rounded and rich intellectual formation (philosophy, literature and medicine) allowed him to enjoy a complete independence of thought and to elaborate an original work. He opposed the head physicians of the Salpêtrière Hospital (Charcot, Raymond, Babinski, Déjerine…) frontally or diplomatically enjoying all the while interesting working conditions. Finally, he prepared the advent of modern psychiatry and of psychology, viz.: Henri Ey and organodynamism, the notion of dissociation, the debate around relations between cerebral physiology and psychology.
