Abstract

To study the process of piercing of a thin plate by knocking out a plug upon impact of a cylindrical rod, the methodof [I] was used; it ensures registration of the force characteristics of interaction. With the aid of this method we investigated the piercing of plates in the form of disks, 3 mm thick and with 62 mm diameter, which were accelerated in a barrel together with a tray to a specified speed and then hit a rod with i0 mm diameter which was firmly fixed at the muzzle face of the barrel. The load on the rod was recorded by a capacitive transducer in the form of a ring mounted at a distance of 40 mm from the end face of the rod. The error of measuring stress amplitudes amounted to 10%. At the initial part of a typical oscillogram of force vs time (Fig. I) we see an abrupt increase of the signal and its subsequent drop. Later there may be a secondary increase of the signal because of superimposed vibrations connected with the wave processes in the plate and with radial vibrations of the rod.
