Abstract

I t is shown that upper and lower bounds on the yield-point load of a shell of uniform thickness can be obtained from a consideration of related piecewise linear problems. The bounds are independent of the yield criterion and may be obtained when the material yield stress in either tension or shear is known. The theory is given for a general shell problem, simplified for a circular cylindrical shell, and applied to a particular example.
