Abstract

We present in this article the recent epidemiological data on congenital heart defects (CHD) : descriptive and analytical epidemiology are successively addressed. In order to facilitate the task of practitioners who are confronted to a CHD case, the genetics of CHD are presented by types of CHD although each predisposing genetic factor is associated with a variety of CHD types. These recent progress allow a better understanding of the determinism of CHD and thus improve counselling of parents of affected children and adults with CHD who would like to have children. Nevertheless, important progress in knowledge are needed to gain a better understanding of genetic and environmental predisposing factors in order to improve genetic counselling and prompt efficiently a particular monitoring of pregnancies for individuals who have risk factors.
