Abstract

The different aspects of rabies epidemiology are described, based on detailed data supplied by Institut Pasteur and the Algerian Veterinary Services. The importance of this zoonosis in animals and in man, the role played by the various species in maintaining the disease, and the geographical distribution of rabies enzootics are given from 1970 to today. During this period, over 839 people died of rabies, almost all of them after having been bitten by rabid dogs. The latter are the main vector and reservoir of the rabies virus in Algeria, although cats and cattle have also been known to transmit rabies at certain periods. The author concludes that it is very difficult to control animal rabies in this country, and he suggests that, if serious prophylactic measures are not implemented (such as the capture and slaughter of stray dogs), preventive antirabies vaccination may have to be included in the extended vaccination programs of the human populations at risk in Algeria.
