Abstract

This elderly man was complaining of pain in both ears that seemed to be brought on when he lay in bed at night. Sometimes the pain was so severe and throbbing that he was unable to sleep. For his age, his health was reasonably good and he still led a fairly active life. However, the pain and loss of sleep were such that he was beginning to feel irritable, tired and depressed. On examination, the only abnormal finding was a firm, thickened nodule on the lateral rim of the upper part of the helices of both ears, with a scaly surface that was tender on pressure.
