Abstract

John, a 42-year-old computer operator, presented to the clinic with an itchy plaque on his left ankle. It had been present for around 2 years and had caused him no pain but some discomfort as a result of persistent itching. His wife had urged him to seek help, because she had become aware of John's constant scratching and rubbing of the lesion. John had no history of any skin problems and there was no family history of eczema or psoriasis. On examination, there was a well-defined, lichenified (thickened) plaque, covered with a white scale, close to the left ankle.
