Abstract

variety of simple and complex biological molecules form H-bonded solids. We have studied vibrational dynamics in amino acid, peptide, and protein crystals [1]. Ps CARS used to measure the lifetime of various optical phonons (ω = 30 – 1500 cm−1) in H-bonded crystals, and in a number of cases surprisingly long phonon lifetimes (many ns) were observed. Because there are many long-lived phonons in these crystals, we can study how the phonon dynamics are altered by the phonon frequency, the crystal structure, the temperature, or the presence of impurities [1].
