Abstract

We use picosecond transient grating techniques to separate and identify the contributions of both orientational and concentration gratings produced in germanium by the direct absorption of nearly monochromatic polarized radiation. Comparison of the grating lifetimes for the two grating sources confirms that we have for the first time directly observed an anisotropic (in momentum or k-space) filling of the optically-coupled states in a semiconductor.
