Abstract

A silicon avalanche photodiode, gated with 330 ps pulse duration at 125 MHz repetition rate, is operated as an opto-electronic pulsed cross-correlator with dc output. Optical pulses can be detected with about 3×10 -3 photons per pulse sensitivity, and with 10 ps timing accuracy. Possible applications could be displacement and distance measurement, time dispersion measurement in optical fibers, transient absorption and fluorescence decay measurement.
