Abstract

The excimer formation process of phenyl groups of polystyrene (PST) in THF solution was investigated by means of picosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Very rapid excimer formation taking place in several tens of picoseconds was observed in addition to the slower process in subnanosecond time regions. We examined the effects of the temperature and degrees of polymerization on the excimer formation process. On the basis of the obtained results, its dynamics and mechanism were discussed from the viewpoint of the mode of the molecular motion of PST in solution.
