Abstract

The article cites a study published online in the January 24, 2012 issue of the journal "Molecular Ecology," regarding botany research by ecologist Melissa McCormick of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, Maryland, and colleagues. The four-year study, which investigated where mycorrhizal fungi grow and under what conditions they stimulate orchids to grow, found the fungi, like orchids, need specific environmental conditions to thrive.
