Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of Pick which is a multi-user operating system which, like Unix, is available on a wide variety of systems ranging from personal computers to mainframes. The United Kingdom is at present the biggest market for the system outside the United States, with some 3,000 installations. Microdata's successor, McDonnell Douglas, is still the market leader. Its operating system, called Reality, is a superset of Pick. Other Pick licensees have also developed their own version, with added functionality, and this has caused compatibility concerns. There are about 3,000 packages available worldwide for use with Pick systems, and it is clearly an advantage both to end-users and software developers if they can be run on all Pick systems. Pick has been constantly updated since it was first released. Originally, the different versions were known by their year of introduction; thus, the 1980 version was known as Release 80. In 1984, however, R84 was rechristened Open Architecture Version 1.0.
