Abstract

The history of the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212) in theEstoria de España—based on archbishop Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada's narration included in theHistoria de rebus Hispanie— presents not only expressions of faith and the crusader spirit that one expects in a work written by a prominent member of the Church, but also the respect and admiration for the Muslim enemy such as found in many Castilian epic texts. The crusader fervor, imported from other European regions, did not change the complex and at times benign relation between Muslims and Christians in the Iberian Peninsula.
