Abstract
Abstract Expeditions were a peculiarly fascinating part of 19th-century scientific intelligence gathering. Herculean efforts, often consuming considerable personal fortunes and government coffers in the process of fuelling the furnace of scientific enquiry, also fired the imagination and caught the fancy of the general public. The bold and popular adventurers opened up the world as it had never been known before. Newspaper accounts and lavishly printed books spun tales of adventure and discovery to a scientific and general public that was enthralled and uplifted by the adventures of a few. Substantial reputations were often founded on the bedrock of an experience in a remote land.
