Abstract

Significant photochemical air pollution occurring on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, is associated only with the west-southwest wind trajectories, over the open ocean, from the New York through Washington, DC are. The generation of photochemical pollution appears to be influenced by cloud coverage between the primary emission source and Nantucket. This study utilised ozone-sensitive indicator plants of Bel-W3 tobacco, in conjuction with calibrated Mast oxidant meters, to demonstrate the long range transport of oxidant pollution (the oxidant probably being ozone).
